2.13.2 Serra da Estrela

Charnecas e Matos

Fabaceae (Leguminosae):Adenocarpus, Cytisus, Echinospartum, Genista, Pterospartum, Ulex
Ericaceae: Arbutus, Calluna, Erica, Vaccinium
Cistaceae: Cistus, Halimium, Helianthemum

...The structure of matos varies from open and very low to dense and man-sized, rarely to twice that height. Higher scrub or thickets ( "matagal", "brenha", "high maquis") have a pre forestal character ... The matos gained large extensions after the forests disappeared as a result of cutting, burning and grazing. In the absence of man and his livestock these areas would gradually develop towards woodland again. eventually leading to the climax forest. The exception to this rule is found at sites unsuitable for forests like the highest parts of the Estrela. where strong winds, heavy cold and a thick snow cover in winter prevent the growth of trees. The maintenance of the matos is largely depending on their use. Since the traditional agro-pastoral system is about to collapse the future of the mains is at stake .... Finally it is stressed that matos often host an interesting bryophyte and lichen flora.... (From Jan Jansen (2002).

Urzal (plural: urzais) (engl. heathlands)

...Heathland (Portuguese urzal: plural: urzais) is a formation of dwarf shrubs commonly belonging to the Heath family (Ericaceae). Heathlands are usually found in areas with high precipitation on acidic sandy or gravelly soils. They may be found throughout Europe, but they reach optimal extension along the West-European coasts stretching from Portugal up to Norway, mainly in the domain of Atlantic deciduous oak and beech forests. The highest diversity of heathlands is reached in the northwestem quadrant of the Iberian Peninsula…(From Jan Jansen (2002).

GÉHU (1975) and RIVAS-MARTÍNEZ (1979) fizeram revisões e sumarizam os sistemas diferentes existentes.

Tojal (plural: tojais) (engl. gorse)

Esteval (plural: estevais) (rockrose)

Pinus pinea L. e Eucalyptus globulus LabiIl.).

In heathlands with strong Mediterranean influence Cistus and other species (often rich in ethereal oils, such as lavender and thyme) become more important constituents of the shrub layer. In Portugal formations predominated by Cistus spp. are called estevais, named after Esteva (Cistus ladanifer). Species with preference for marked Mediterranean conditions are:

Giestas (engl. broom)

Broom fields are predominated by shrub species of the Pea family (Leguminosae) that usually have root nodules, containing bacteria that may fix atmospheric nitrogen. Broom fields generally develop best on well drained deep soils, often supplying the top layer with a mild humus (mull type). Broom species are important constituents of natural mantle formations of woodlands. However, nowadays they form extended semi-natural broom fields being amongst the first stages in the substitution of several oligo- and mesotrophic climatic forests. In Europe broom formations are best developed and reach their highest diversity in the western and central part of the Iberian Peninsula. …

Species in the Estrela with preference for broom fields are :

Mato “almofadado” (coxim - convexo) -  hedgehog-heaths (cushion-heaths)

Hedgehog scrub is dominated by spiny, often cushion-like shrub species that resemble hedgehogs. In general these rounded. intricately branched shrub species occur in arid regions, such as the Middle-East or North-Africa. The formations in the Iberian Peninsula may be seen as outposts. The shrubs are usually able to tolerate extremely severe weather conditions. Reduction in leaf-size, and the general development of woodiness, often associated with spines, are adaptations that help them to survive, while a short flowering period, very intense when it comes, is characteristic. In the Serra da Estrela two types of hedgehog scrub occur, one in the middle belt. the other in the upper belt. Characteristic species are Echinospartum ibericum subsp. ibericum, Echinospartum ibericum subsp. pulviniformis, and Teucrium salviastrum.

“Mato de zimbro” - dwarf juniper

This type of scrub is dominated by Dwarf juniper. Comparable formations often occur over the timberline in the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula, and the Alps; in Boreal and Polar regions they occur also at lower altitudes. The Juniper is well known for its bluish-black berries often used to flavour gin or for instance Sauerkraut (choucroute). Moreover the Juniper is also used in various medicinal applications (e.g. kidney disease , menstrual disorder). The needles of the Dwarf juniper give a litter that is ponderously decomposed. mostly giving a moder or raw type of humus. Dwarf juniper scrub in the Serra da Estrela is presented as one type, although it may appear in various assemblages.
